What is biomass?

Biomass is the product of energy generation from living or once-living organisms. In other words, it is a modern term for ancient technology of burning animal, plant or agricultural waste for energy production. For thousands of years, people have burned wood - a form of biomass- to heat their home. With the explosive growth of technologies, biomass is not just about keeping warm. More than that, biomass is used to generate electricity and other clean fuel as well. When it is burned, energy is released as heat and converted into electricity and fuel.

Pros and cons of biomass

Every coins have two sides, so it is crucial to profile both advantages and disadvantages of biomass. Its benifits are profiled below:

1. Waste reduction: hardly can we deny that the more biomass energy plants are, the fewer landfills become. In fact, waste management is a serious issue in many nations and generating energy from biomass materials actually helps improve this problem. Hence, biomass has a positive impact on environment.

2. High availability: actually, plant and animal waste keeps increasing, becoming aan abundant biomass source. In addition, biomass energy can be produced easily by anyone, which , therefore, reduces the need for centralised power.

3. Carbon neutral: throughout the lifecycle, plants absorb carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and release it back into environment since they are burnt in biomass energy plant. This amount of carbon dioxide is then absorbed by new plants to balance carbon emission in the environment.

Merits of biomass

Besides these merits, some demerits can be mentioned such as:

1. Take up land: energy crops for biomass generation have replace lands for agriculture and conservation. In a more serious aspect, there may be even risk of deforestation due to unmanaged biomass production. In this case, strict control is significantly essential.

2. Carbon dioxide emission: useful and economical as biomass is, it does emit CO2 into the atmosphere. For this reason, people need to monitor carefully to ensure the amount not to exceed the standard rate.

3. Other harmful emission: fuels generated from biomass releases a variety gases such as: arbon monoxide, NOx (nitrogen oxides), VOCs (volatile organic compounds),... which contribute to environmental polution.

Biomass also brings some problems

Five types of biomass:

As mentioned above, biomass is made of plants and animals. This part will name its five typical types on a detailed basis:

1. Wood and agricultural products: most of biomass used today is home grown energy. Logs, chips, bark and sawdust make up the largest proportion of biomass. Surprisingly, a large number of paper mills take advantage of their waste to generate steam as well as electricity.

2. Biodiesel: is made from chemically reacting alcohol with vegetable oils, animal fats and recycled grease trap waste which can replace regular diesel in cars, trucks and ships.

3. Solid Waste: A ton of garbage has as much energy as 500 pounds of coal. But half of this energy comes from non-biomass like plastic.

4. Ethanol: is made by fermenting starches and sugars in plant and then distilling them. Actually, any kinds of organic material that contain starches, sugars or cellulose can be easily turned into ethanol.

5. Landfill gas and biogas: as waste rots or decays, it produces methane gas. Hence, methane gas can be collected, purified and used as fuel.
