Two of the most common options for horse stall bedding are horse shavings and bedding pellets. Each has its advantages and disadvantages to consider, but in both cases, it is important to get only high-quality products. Low-grade shavings may be more affordable in the short run, but when your horse becomes ill, you’ll realize it wasn’t a bargain after all.
- Horse Shavings – One of the most obvious advantages of horse shavings is that they smell wonderful when you first put them into a horse stall. One disadvantage is that they can be quite dusty unless you go with high-quality bagged screened horse shavings that have eliminated the dust. This bagged product is easier to store and easier to use.
- Bedding Pellets – Bedding pellets are very storage-friendly because they are compacted into small pellets. They are easy to clean, compost fairly quickly and are very absorbent. On the downside, they are more expensive to buy at first, although it is like using cat litter in that you don’t have to toss it all out when it becomes dirty. They can be dusty, but you can use water to activate the pellets and reduce dust.
